Surroundings:
Visitors to Gipuzkoa can enjoy the rich natural environment and uncommonly beautiful surroundings. Tranquil beaches, majestic mountains, enchanting forests, cliffs, and a highly impressive artistic and historic heritage.
Coastal areas:
- Donostialdea:
San Sebastian and its surroundings, encompassing localities such as: Lasarte, Hernani, Astigarraga (famous for its cider houses), Andoain, etc. What is there left to say about Donostia (San Sebastian), an awe-inspiring city, which invites you to walk along its streets and beaches... and try some of the typical tapas served in the old town. It also has a wide range of cultural activities throughout the year.
- Oarsoaldea:
Region comprised of the municipalities of Errenteria, Lezo, Pasaia and Oiartzun. Visitors to the regions will find Aiako Harria park, the attractive coastal village of Pasai Donibane, with the house of Victor Hugo, San Marcos fort in Errenteria... All protected by the imposing mount Jaizkibel.
- Bidasoa Txingudi:
Irun and Hondarribia make up this region, which borders France. The mouth of the river Bidasoa joins up these two municipalities creating an immense bay and huge beaches. Hondarribia also has one of the area’s most attractive old towns.
- Urola Costa:
Encompasses the localities of Orio-Aia, Getaria, Zarautz and Zumaia, all coastal towns with beaches, the pick of which are those of Zarautz, due to its sheer size and Itzurun in Zumaia, at the foot of a cliff. Getaria is known for its characteristic fishing port and for its famous Txakoli wine. In Orio visitors can enjoy the local love of rowing and regattas of traineras. This region also contains Pagoeta park and its old railway.
Inland areas:
- Alto Urola y Urola medio:
These regions are located along the channel of the river Urola. The pick of the localities are Legazpi, and its famous Mirandaola railway; Azpeitia, where Loiola basilica can be found, and Azkoitia, for its railway museum.
- Goierri and Tolosaldea:
These regions contain the towns of Tolosa, Billabona, Beasain, Ordizia... Tolosa is famous for its Carnival, and its famous beans; Ordizia hosts the province’s largest market where typical homemade Gipuzkoa products can be bought.
